The Greek Health Ministry announced on 2 November that the WHO Athens Office on Quality of Care and Patient Safety has been approved for transition to a Geographically Dispersed Office (GDO). The decision concerns WHO Europe’s 76th Regional Committee session in Copenhagen on 27–29 October 2026; it is not presented as a decision taken today.

The expanded role

WHO’s Greece office publicly confirms approval of the transition. It describes stronger technical cooperation, knowledge exchange, innovation support and translation of evidence into quality-of-care and patient-safety policy across the European Region.

An existing office, a new institutional step

The Athens office was established in April 2021. This development concerns its status and regional role, rather than establishment of a new hospital. The ministry links cooperation to Greece’s National Strategy for Quality of Care and Patient Safety 2025–2030 and the Health-IQ programme.

The announcements do not establish a new individual benefit, application deadline or recruitment round for citizens or professionals. Claims of international recognition are attributed to the ministry and do not constitute an independent measurement of service improvement.
