The Ministry of Culture announces that the restored centrally planned church at Maximianoupoli has been made visitable. The monument lies about seven kilometres west of Komotini and is the only monument excavated to date within the ancient city’s fortifications, according to the official account.

What the project involved

The ministry reports €1.5 million in Recovery Fund financing. Works included structural stabilisation, conservation and restoration, protection of mortar and stone elements, and infrastructure improving visitor access and accessibility.

The Rodopi Ephorate of Antiquities and the Directorate for the Conservation of Ancient and Modern Monuments carried out the project. The official description dates the church to between the 11th and 13th centuries and identifies its centrally planned, hexagonal layout.

Visits and worship

Religious services may take place in coordination with the relevant Ephorate of Antiquities. The release does not specify visiting hours; the handover does not imply unrestricted access at any time.
