Municipalities: €300m for recycling and €240m for overdue energy bills announced
The prime minister’s announcements in Kalamata also cover schools, local roads and energy. Some measures depend on subsequent decisions.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced funding for recycling, overdue energy bills and school maintenance on 5 November 2026, at the annual conference of the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece in Kalamata.
Funding announced
The prime minister said €300 million from the Hellenic Recycling Agency would be credited immediately for municipal recycling projects and €240 million would be made available in November to settle overdue municipal debts to energy suppliers. The speech provides neither a municipality-by-municipality allocation nor confirmation that funds have already been credited.
He also announced plans to double the annual state grant for school building maintenance, an additional €50 million for batteries to support self-consumption from local renewable sources, and an option for municipalities to raise the accommodation levy from 0.75% to 1%. The speech does not establish an automatic increase in all municipalities.
Measures with conditions
For roads within towns and settlements, the prime minister set a target of €200 million per year for four years from a special levy that he said could take effect once the fuel market stabilises. He did not announce an immediate start date for the levy.
An additional arrangement for up to €60 million in outstanding debt requires cooperation with Public Power Corporation. On a special municipal electricity tariff, he announced talks and said implementation depended on easing market disruption. The next documents to check for projects, funds and charges are the implementing decisions and allocations.
