Kalamata inaugurates solar sludge drying facility
The plant has an annual capacity of 11,000 tonnes and is designed to receive sludge from four municipalities in Messinia.

A new solar sludge drying facility near Kalamata’s wastewater treatment plant was inaugurated on 5 November 2026. The Greek Prime Minister’s Office confirmed the ceremony, which the Municipality of Kalamata had announced in advance.
Which areas it will serve
The plant has a stated capacity of 11,000 tonnes a year. It is designed to receive sludge from wastewater treatment facilities in Kalamata and the municipalities of Pylos–Nestor, Oichalia and Trifylia. Capacity describes how much the facility can process; the announcement gives no figures for quantities already received.
Sludge is the residue left after wastewater treatment. The facility aims to dry it so it can be used as a soil improver. The Prime Minister’s Office lists agriculture and forest management as potential uses. It did not announce deliveries to users or detailed distribution conditions.
What the €165 million figure covers
The same announcement places the project among 18 facilities supported by a combined €165 million from the Recovery and Resilience Facility. The figure refers to all the facilities. The inauguration announcement does not specify Kalamata’s individual cost or a timetable for full operation.
