An initial four-day training course for 25 journalists working in public media is included in the high-risk-assignment initiative announced jointly on 3 November 2026. A cooperation memorandum was signed with participation from the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, the Secretariat General for Communication and Information, journalists’ unions and the Hellenic Red Cross.

What the training covers

The announced course provides practical preparation at Armed Forces facilities: risk recognition and assessment, safe movement, critical-incident management, first aid, injury management and simulations of high-risk conditions.

Participants include ESIEA, ESPIT and ESIEA’s Educational Foundation. Scientific expertise is provided through cooperation with Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the International Centre for the Safety of Journalists. The authorities link the initiative to the public-sector journalists’ collective agreement signed in August.

The next course is not yet open

A separate course is planned for journalists and television crews covering fires, floods, earthquakes and humanitarian crises. Its description concerns safe access and withdrawal and cooperation with Civil Protection.

The announcement gives no general application call, registration deadline or specific course dates. Signing the memorandum does not mean every interested journalist has already been admitted or that the initial course has been completed. Practical participation terms require a further official announcement.
