Didymoteicho: three restored post-Byzantine churches return to their communities
Work is complete in Paliouri, Metaxades and Alepochori. Wall paintings and icon screens were conserved and fire protection was installed.

Three post-Byzantine churches near Didymoteicho were handed back to their communities for worship on 5 November after restoration. Greece’s Ministry of Culture published the details on 6 November, and the local diocese confirmed the handover.
They are Saint Panteleimon in Paliouri and the churches of Saint Athanasius in Metaxades and Alepochori. The ministry dates them to the late 17th and early 18th centuries. They are single-aisle basilicas with timber roofs and interior wall paintings.
What was restored
The works, with a total budget of €1 million from the Recovery and Resilience Facility, included masonry stabilisation, roof repairs, drainage, and conservation of wall paintings and wooden icon screens. New wiring, lighting and automatic fire protection were installed. The Ephorate of Antiquities of Evros and the Directorate for the Conservation of Ancient and Modern Monuments carried out the works.
