Greece’s Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports announced on 3 November 2026 a €1,036,500 grant to Aristotle University of Thessaloniki for payment of the student housing allowance. According to the announcement, Minister Sofia Zacharaki approved the funding from the ministry’s regular budget for financial year 2026.

The money is allocated to the university to cover the allowance for its eligible students. The announcement does not specify a payment date, how many students will be paid from this allocation, or a detailed list of beneficiaries. Funding approval does not confirm that students’ bank accounts have already been credited.

What it means for applicants

For eligible students studying in Thessaloniki, the ministry states an annual allowance of €1,500, or €2,000 when sharing accommodation, subject to the programme’s conditions. These are presented as the existing arrangements rather than a new increase introduced by today’s grant.

The official housing-allowance portal continues to display the reopening of applications for academic year 2025–2026 from 17 to 22 September 2026. The same period is confirmed in a notice by Aristotle University’s School of Psychology. The new funding announcement does not reopen applications in November or set a new deadline for supporting documents. Applicants need information from the university’s responsible services about their individual application and payment.
