Hubert Aiwanger, Bavaria’s deputy minister-president and economy minister, was found dead in a hotel room in Berlin’s Mitte district in the early evening of 4 November 2026. A joint statement by Berlin police and prosecutors confirms the death.

What the authorities are investigating

Prosecutors and the responsible state criminal police unit have opened a death investigation. According to the statement, its purpose is to determine the precise cause and circumstances and examine possible third-party involvement.

No cause of death has been announced. Opening the investigation does not itself establish that a crime occurred. The authorities say their inquiries are continuing.

Confirmation from Bavaria

The Bavarian State Parliament confirmed that Aiwanger was 55. Its president, Ilse Aigner, and the parliamentary presidium expressed condolences to his family, describing his unexpected death as a loss to political life in Bavaria.
