Balance: small exercises with reliable support
Practising stability has a place alongside walking and strengthening.

Balance matters in everyday movements: turning, stepping up or changing direction. It is not only an athletic skill.
The NHS guide includes slow sideways steps and walking with one heel in front of the other foot’s toes. It recommends practising near a wall or stable chair so support is available.
For older adults, WHO highlights activities combining balance and muscle strengthening. Difficulty should suit the person’s ability rather than how impressive an exercise looks.
Clear obstacles from the space before starting. If you have fallen recently or feel unsteady, seek assessment and guidance before attempting more demanding movements without support.
