Hands in cold weather: a small routine after washing
Moisturising, gentle products and protection during chores — while keeping up hand hygiene.

Frequent washing and dry air can leave hands rough. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends moisturising after washing or sanitising, without replacing or undermining hand hygiene.
Three practical steps
- Pat dry and apply cream while skin is still slightly damp.
- Choose a fragrance-free, dye-free cream or ointment. Keep a tube near the sink as a reminder.
- Wear gloves in cold weather and suitable protective gloves for wet work or cleaning products.
Sun protection remains useful for uncovered hands outdoors in winter. There is no need to try several new products at once.
Persistent itching, bleeding or cracks that do not improve warrant a dermatologist's assessment. This guide covers basic care and does not diagnose eczema or another condition.
