UK announces Typhoon defensive missions in Saudi Arabia
The 20 October announcement includes an A400M and military advisers. London says the Typhoons will not conduct offensive strikes against the Houthis.

The UK Ministry of Defence announced additional military support for Saudi Arabia on 20 October 2026. It includes RAF Typhoon fighters for defensive counter-air missions, an A400M transport aircraft and military advisers.
The fighters’ role
The official announcement says the Typhoons will help protect Saudi cities and critical infrastructure from aerial attacks by intercepting drones and missiles. The ministry specifies that these aircraft will not conduct offensive strikes against the Houthis.
The A400M is intended to move defence materiel within Saudi Arabia, while advisers will support Saudi staff officers. The announcement gives neither a Typhoon number nor a specific arrival timetable. The decision is not reported as an already completed deployment.
Refuelling support is distinct
London also announces extended air-to-air refuelling support for Saudi operations, including operations against Houthi military targets in Yemen. This is separate from the British Typhoons’ assignment: the fighters’ defensive restriction does not mean every form of UK support is confined to Saudi airspace.
The government’s justification
Defence Secretary Wes Streeting linked the decision to Houthi attacks, particularly on Riyadh’s airport. The British government cites civilian protection, security and effects on energy supplies and the cost of living. This is its official justification, not an independent assessment of the mission’s effectiveness or consequences.
