North Korea fires different missile types; one flies over 900 km
Seoul said the missiles appeared to be of different types and that one type flew more than 900 km. The National Security Office convened an emergency meeting.
Update, 12 October 2026, 06:02 Athens time — What changed: South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the ballistic missiles launched from near Pyongyang appeared to be of different types and that one type flew for more than 900 kilometres.
South Korea's National Security Office convened an emergency meeting. It described the launches as violations of UN Security Council resolutions and called for them to stop immediately; this is Seoul's official position.
A Joint Chiefs spokesperson assessed the launches as a show of force following South Korea's hypersonic-missile test. That assessment is explicitly attributed to Seoul and is not an independently established motive of Pyongyang.
Japan's coast guard detected two projectiles and said both appeared to have already fallen. No damage or injuries had been reported in the accessible official updates.
Previous update — 05:03 Athens time
Initial update, 12 October 2026, 05:03: North Korea launched multiple ballistic missiles toward the sea off its east coast, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The launches were detected at about 09:20 local time — 03:20 in Athens — from an area near Pyongyang. In its initial statement, the South Korean military did not disclose the precise number, type, range or maximum altitude of the missiles.
Japan detected at least two
Japan's Defence Ministry said it detected at least two missiles and that they fell outside Japan's exclusive economic zone. No damage or injuries were reported in the first official assessment.
This is a separate incident from the 3 October test described below. By the time of this update, North Korea had not issued a statement identifying the new projectiles or the purpose of the launch.
The regional context
The launch came amid heightened military tension on the Korean peninsula. South Korea had announced a test of a domestically developed hypersonic weapon several days earlier. The timing alone does not establish a causal link between the two events.
The previous 3 October update
North Korea launched a ballistic missile toward the sea off its east coast on 3 October. South Korean military authorities announced the launch and Japan confirmed it.
Kim Yo Jong, a senior ruling-party official and the North Korean leader's sister, later said it was a test of an intermediate-range strategic missile. She said Kim Jong Un oversaw the exercise by a special-mission firing unit.
South Korea's military said that projectile flew for more than 700 kilometres from the Wonsan area. North Korean claims about an undulating trajectory, low-altitude manoeuvring and artificial-intelligence technology were not independently verified.
The precise model, maximum altitude and impact point were not disclosed. No damage or injuries were reported in the accessible official updates.
