Sweden: Centre Party leader returns government-formation mandate
Ringqvist says she could not secure a government solution. The Speaker received her report on 26 October and will announce the next steps.

Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist, leader of Sweden’s Centre Party, has ended her exploratory effort without agreement on a new government. ERT reported on 26 October 2026 that she announced she was returning the mandate to parliamentary Speaker Andreas Norlén.
What the official announcement confirms
The Riksdag confirmed in its 26 October announcement that Norlén had received Ringqvist’s report on the prospects for forming a government that parliament could tolerate. It said the Speaker would hold telephone discussions with party representatives and return with an announcement of the next steps.
According to ERT’s account of her press conference, Ringqvist’s assessment is that there is support for centrist policies, but not the agreement needed for a centrist government. This is her political assessment of the consultations.
No new vote announced yet
Receiving the report and returning the exploratory mandate are stages in the consultations. This parliamentary announcement does not name a new prime-ministerial candidate, set a vote date or announce an early election.
