A total of €8.5 million has been allocated to repair earthquake damage to monuments on Mount Athos and in the regional units of Thesprotia and Ioannina, according to a joint announcement by two Greek ministries on 8 October 2026.

The allocation was approved by Deputy National Economy and Finance Minister Nikos Papathanasis following a recommendation by the Government Committee for State Aid, chaired by Deputy Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Kostas Katsafados.

The funding framework

The money comes from the Special Programme for Natural-Disaster Response and Restoration under the 2026–2030 National Development Programme. The programme covers prevention, restoration and infrastructure-resilience measures after natural disasters.

The new announcement confirms the total amount and the three geographic areas receiving funding. It is an allocation of public funds, not a statement that restoration work has already been completed.

What has not yet been published

The joint release does not name the individual monuments, specify how much of the total will go to each area or provide a detailed timetable for studies, contracts and construction work.

Individual inclusion decisions, technical acts and procedures by the Ministry of Culture or other competent bodies are still needed to identify the exact projects, implementing authorities and dates. Until then, it cannot be assumed that every damaged monument has already been included or that all work will begin at the same time.

Why the decision matters

The allocation creates funding capacity to protect cultural heritage damaged by earthquakes. The next critical step is publication of the detailed intervention list and implementing acts showing how the €8.5 million will be distributed.
