Methoni Castle: coastal protection for the western sea wall
The Culture Ministry has announced protection works. Restoration and enhancement of the western wall have a €1.7 million budget.

The Ministry of Culture is proceeding with coastal protection works for the western sea wall of Methoni Castle, according to its 2 October announcement. Restoration and enhancement of the wall, budgeted at €1.7 million, are funded through the ministry’s National Development Programme.
Protection from waves
Continuous exposure to the sea has caused stone erosion, cracks and collapses. The study identifies five major cavities and collapse areas arising from different causes: historical bombardments, rainfall and wave action.
The intervention is designed to protect the coast and monument with an underwater structure that limits visual impact. The marine environment also requires protection.
The project’s stage
The necessary preparatory studies were completed through cooperation between the ministry, the Peloponnese Region and Pylos–Nestor Municipality. The announcement concerns advancing construction, not certification of completion or handover.
The western wall dates to the 13th century, with later repairs. Its protection contributes to preserving an important medieval fortified complex in Messenia.
