Meta ordered to pay $25 billion in New Mexico data-privacy case
The 21 October ruling concerns the Cambridge Analytica case. Meta says it plans to appeal.

A New Mexico court has imposed $25 billion in civil penalties on Meta in a case concerning misleading statements to Facebook users about their personal data. The state Department of Justice confirms the 21 October 2026 ruling.
Verdict and penalty
The case stems from the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The department says jurors found 43,899,725 violations of state consumer protection law; the subsequent court order sets the financial penalty.
Meta’s response
Reuters reports that Meta’s chief legal officer, C. J. Mahoney, said the company plans to appeal and is confident it will prevail. The penalty should not be described as money already paid or compensation available to Greek users.
