A project to build a new prison in Megalopoli has been included in the Special Just Development Transition Programme of the 2021–2025 National Development Programme, with a budget of €39.9 million. The Ministry of National Economy and Finance announced Deputy Minister Nikos Papathanasis’s decision on 29 October 2026.

The budget covers buildings, construction work, electromechanical installations, security systems and the preparatory work required to implement the project.

What is planned

The ministry envisages facilities with different security levels and production, educational, craft and agricultural units. It links the design to prisoner reintegration and reducing overcrowding; these are project objectives, not already measured outcomes.

Which stage is confirmed

The announcement establishes inclusion in a funding programme. It publishes no construction contract, contractor, start, completion or opening date. References to employment prospects are not a vacancy announcement or an invitation to apply.
