Rhodes: Afantou road closures and a newer municipal-bus notice
Specific closures and the 15 October school suspension have been added. The blanket municipal-bus suspension is no longer presented as active.

Updated 15.10.2026 · 13:14 Athens time — What changed
Official closures to vehicles and pedestrians on the Afantou coastal road and Pipinou Street have been added. Rhodes Municipality asks people to use alternative routes and respect barriers. No lifting time is stated; restoration of another service does not mean these roads have reopened.
The closure of schools at all levels expressly covers Thursday 15 October in all municipal units. It includes preschool facilities, special schools, children’s creative-activity centres, sports facilities, the municipal conservatory and municipal workshops, for safety checks and damage recording. This notice does not establish an extension to 16 October.
A newer municipal-bus announcement
An official notice was found announcing restoration from 17:30 of all municipal-bus routes that had been suspended. The municipal page is dated 15 October, but the same text had already appeared in Dimokratiki on 14 October at 17:21. The notice’s body does not name a day.
The earlier blanket suspension is therefore no longer presented as active, but 17:30 is not described as a new starting time today. The notice concerns municipal buses, not every bus operator, and is not on-the-ground confirmation of every service running today.
Update history
Previous reports follow. The update above takes precedence for the current status of these specific measures.
Updated 15.10.2026 · 00:57 Athens time — What changed
The latest cross-check adds the death of a 62-year-old man in Stegna, Rhodes, during the 14 October storm. Reuters, citing a Hellenic Coast Guard statement, reported that torrents swept his car onto the beach; four vehicles were swept into the sea. ERT News reported that the man was taken to the health centre without signs of life, where he was pronounced dead.
Earlier Rhodes Municipality notices concerned specific road closures and municipal-bus suspensions. They give no reopening time and do not confirm whether services have since resumed; check for a newer notice before assuming a route is open.
Previous update — 14.10.2026, 18:10
Rhodes Municipality's official notices dated 14 October add specific road and bus-service suspensions to the general advice to restrict travel.
- Archangelos bridge: a temporary closure of the bridge connecting the main road with the settlement because of heavy rainfall.
- Archangelos–Malona, Aithonas area: closure following a large rockfall that damaged the road surface and protective barriers.
- Municipal bus service: temporary suspension of all routes within Rhodes town and the bus to and from Akantia harbour. A separate notice concerns the Rhodes–Faliraki route.
The checked announcements do not specify a reopening time. They do not establish a closure of every road or every bus operator on the island. Drivers are asked to use alternative routes and follow signs and instructions from traffic police and Civil Protection.
Previous update — 14 October, 09:03
In an official notice dated 14 October 2026, Rhodes Municipality urges residents to avoid all non-essential travel over the coming hours because of severe weather.
According to ERT South Aegean’s morning report, firefighters rescued a woman from a vehicle immobilised in accumulated water at Asgourou. The report describes road disruption and electricity problems but gives no comprehensive damage assessment.
The municipal guidance advises people to avoid flooded roads and streams and remain somewhere safe until conditions ease. Drivers are urged to slow down, use their lights and take particular care at low-water crossings and coastal roads. For emergencies, call 112.
The advice covers the coming hours and does not specify an expiry time. It does not establish a blanket closure of every road on the island.
Background — impacts of the rain on 12 October
Reports on the rain of 12 October 2026 document specific problems on Lesvos and Rhodes, separate from forecasts about the weather ahead.
Skala Eresos: overflow and debris
A river overflowed in Skala Eresos on Lesvos and a car was swept away near the bridge. Eresos community president Antonis Eleftheriou told local outlet Sto Nisi that an intervention reopened a drainage passage. Water reached yards and debris affected the road toward Mesotopos.
ERT News also reported heavy rain in Molyvos. The local report's account of receding water describes conditions at that update, not an assurance that today's risk has passed.
Rhodes: access problems and public buildings
According to ERT News, water covered a road outside Rhodes airport and entered rooms used by the Court of First Instance and Court of Appeal inside the courthouse.
The checked material does not establish a total damage cost or complete restoration of every affected location. For active instructions, see the Alert section.
