Crete extends precautionary sheep and goat measures through 29 October

The next period starts on 16 October. The ban on animals entering from the rest of Greece remains, with different conditions for movements within the island.

Precautionary measures against sheep and goat pox in Crete are extended for Friday 16 to Thursday 29 October 2026, according to the Region of Crete’s 15 October announcement. They are to be reassessed at the end of that period.

The region says Crete remains free of the disease and attributes the extension to increased cases on mainland Greece. The announcement does not report a confirmed case on the island.

Which movements are permitted

The ban on sheep and goats entering from holdings elsewhere in Greece remains. Within Crete, movements for slaughter are permitted throughout the island, while breeding-related movements are restricted to the same regional unit.

Moves to winter pasture remain possible between regional units, but only within Crete and subject to the applicable conditions. Animals from different holdings must not be transported together.

Movements require health certificates and appropriately certified vehicles disinfected before loading. The destination premises must be cleaned and disinfected before animals enter; the animals must then remain in quarantine for 21 days.

What holdings need to arrange

The instructions call for controlled access by people and vehicles, disinfectant facilities at entrances, separate clothing and footwear, isolation space and immediate notification of veterinary authorities if symptoms are suspected. Feed must not be sourced from prohibited zones.

Businesses moving plant-based animal feed from Bulgaria or Romania must inform their competent Agricultural Development and Veterinary Directorate two days before transport.

Farmers and hauliers should check the specific procedure with the competent veterinary authority before arranging a movement. The general announcement does not replace certificates or the conditions applying to each journey.
