Chania and western Crete: town, culture and summer shores

From the old harbour to a coastal excursion: dividing your days to enjoy western Crete.

Start at the old harbour

The old harbour and Egyptian lighthouse are distinctive Chania scenes. Leave time for districts such as Topanas and Splantzia rather than walking only along the waterfront. Staying in town allows several short evening explorations. A seaside base calls for a dedicated day with plenty of walking time.

Halepa and a cultural stop

Halepa adds the Archaeological Museum and the Eleftherios Venizelos house museum. Choose according to your interests and check visiting hours. You do not have to fit every museum into a day. One thoughtful visit and a neighbourhood walk can offer more than rushing through several venues.

Give the sea its own day

Nea Hora offers a seaside stop in town. Give an excursion elsewhere in western Crete its own day rather than combining several distant beaches. Plan around the journey, the final approach and your companions’ needs. The outing should remain a holiday experience rather than constant movement for another photo.

Five balanced days

Our outline gives two days to town and Halepa, one to a nearby seaside break, one to a longer excursion and one free day. Add routes on a longer stay without removing rest time. Decide how urban or beach-focused you want the holiday to be before choosing a base.
