California: ETS begins notifying families of student-data breach
Notifications began on 16 October; affected students are offered two years of free identity protection.

ETS began notifying students and families on 16 October 2026 about unauthorised access to and copying of files from an SFTP data-transfer service it operated. California’s Department of Education expects notifications to continue through early November.
Depending on the individual, records may include names, birth dates, addresses, disability information and school assessment data. Social Security numbers, financial account details, passwords and parent information were not involved.
The announcement says ETS took the service offline and built a new one with stronger controls. ETS stated it had not, to that point, found evidence that the information had been made public.
Affected current and former students are offered two years of free identity-protection services through Experian IdentityWorks.
