Isaias kills four as US authorises emergency exchange of up to 4 million reserve barrels

About 670,000 customers remained without power and 69% of offshore Gulf oil production was still shut in.

Four people died after Isaias moved across the southeastern United States, according to local authorities and Reuters. The hurricane made landfall near Destin, Florida, as a Category 2 storm and later weakened into a post-tropical cyclone.

About 670,000 customers in Florida, Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi remained without electricity in Reuters' latest count. Two of the deaths were linked to trees falling on homes.

The danger did not end with the downgrade

The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) classified Isaias as post-tropical on Saturday, 10 October, but maintained warnings for heavy rain, flash flooding, damaging winds and tornadoes in parts of the Southeast. The system's downgrade did not mean that every hazard had ended.

Major Gulf production disruption

Based on offshore operators' reports, about 69% of Gulf oil production and 57% of natural-gas production remained temporarily shut in. A total of 113 production platforms had also been evacuated. These were precautionary shutdowns and point-in-time data, not an estimate of permanent capacity losses.

What the Energy Department authorised

The US Department of Energy authorised an emergency exchange of up to 4 million barrels of crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, citing weather-related supply disruptions in the Gulf. An exchange allows companies to receive oil with an obligation to return it later; the authorisation does not by itself establish that the entire approved volume had already been withdrawn.

The development links a humanitarian disaster to energy consequences that may affect international markets. It does not, however, establish a specific change in Greek fuel prices without actual wholesale and retail data.
