Guatemala appoints new police leadership after removing two senior officials

The Interior Ministry announced a new director-general and deputy director for operations on 27 October. The changes are described as administrative restructuring, rather than a judicial finding.

Guatemala’s Interior Minister Marco Antonio Villeda announced new leadership for the National Civil Police (PNC) on 27 October 2026.

The ministry’s official announcement names Erick Rolando Osoy López as director-general and Selvin Solano Galicia as deputy director-general for operations. The state news service AGN earlier reported the minister’s statement removing the holders of the two posts.

Changes in leadership

The ministry describes the appointments as part of a process of evaluation and restructuring within the PNC. It also reports instructions to strengthen the Inspectorate-General’s supervision and oversight. Greater transparency and effectiveness are stated government objectives, rather than demonstrated outcomes.

Context and limits of the announcement

ERTnews reports that the changes follow the killing of former prosecutor Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa on 17 October and criticism of police procedures. The administrative removals and new appointments do not establish the outgoing officials’ involvement in the killing or constitute a judicial decision.
