Updated 25.10.2026 · 19:58, Athens time — What changed
A four-page Greece–Saudi Arabia joint statement has been attached to the official account of the meeting on 25 October 2026. It specifies cooperation beyond the announcement on Patriots remaining in Saudi Arabia, covered in the earlier update.
Electricity interconnection and EMC
The two sides reaffirm the 2022 energy memorandum, including the Saudi–Greek Interconnector, and commit to accelerating cooperation. For the EMC submarine data cable, they acknowledge implementation progress and commit to continued coordination towards completion under the approved timeline.
The statement provides no new operational date, funding amount or completion announcement for either project. These passages record bilateral commitments and an assessment of progress, rather than independent certification of technical readiness.
Hydrogen and shipping routes
The text calls for exploring opportunities to export clean hydrogen from Saudi Arabia to Greece and other European markets. Both sides also stress protection of international maritime routes and express concern over attacks on energy infrastructure. These are shared political positions and cooperation objectives.
Earlier updates — history
Greece is responding positively to Saudi Arabia’s request for Patriots to remain in the Kingdom, according to the prime minister’s office’s account of Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s meeting with Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh on 25 October 2026.
What was announced
Mitsotakis informed his counterpart of Greece’s positive response. The government note recalls that the Greek battery has contributed to Saudi air defence since 2021 and links its presence to protecting energy infrastructure in Yanbu on the Red Sea.
The development therefore concerns continuing the deployment, rather than a first deployment. The note specifies no new end date, additional personnel, cost or operational terms. It does not establish a new interception by the Greek unit.
Connectivity and regional security
The same source says discussions covered freedom of navigation, energy and defence cooperation, and the EMC (East to Med Data Corridor) data project. Discussion of the project does not constitute an announcement of completion or a new contract. Greece’s condemnation of attacks against Saudi Arabia is reported as the government’s position.
