Temporary traffic restrictions will be introduced in central Athens from the afternoon of Tuesday 6 October 2026 until the morning of Thursday 8 October, during the visit of the US Secretary of State and announced protest gatherings. Measures will be at their most extensive on Wednesday 7 October.

When traffic changes

Traffic police plan temporary, gradual road closures and diversions on central routes, with particular focus on Syntagma and roads linked to the visit programme. Measures will be adjusted to conditions and security requirements.

Drivers who need to enter the centre should allow extra time and check official traffic-police updates before travelling. The announcement does not mean every central street will remain closed throughout the entire three-day period.

The separate ban on gatherings

A separate Hellenic Police decision bans all public outdoor gatherings and motorised marches from 06:00 on Wednesday 7 October until 06:00 on Thursday 8 October 2026, only within the defined area set out in the decision.

The area covered

The perimeter follows Rizari, Ploutarchou, Kleomenous, Melinas Merkouri, Koniari, Anastasiou Tsocha, Vasilissis Sofias Avenue, Kaisareias, Michalakopoulou, Alkmanos, Ionos Dragoumi, Vasileos Alexandrou Avenue and Evfroniou, returning to Rizari.

The gathering ban has a specific time and geographical scope. It is distinct from the traffic measures, which will be activated gradually and may affect routes as the day develops.
